Friday, 14.07.2006 - Schaenis, St. Gallen

In the 2nd decade BC were built at least 3 watchtowers (Amden -  Stralegg, Filzbach - Vor dem Wald) at the Walensee. These arose within the alp campaigns of the Romans.

WatchtowerOne of it stood on the Biberlichopf, which lies above Ziegelbrücke. This place is 140 meters above the bottom of the valley.

The tower had a square form from 9 to 9 meters. The walls are 2.4 meters broad in the basis. They were blended with lime stones.

In the interior was a water basin in the southern corner. The tower had an enclosure wall form 24.5 to 20.5 meters.

During the excavation following was found among other things: Fragments of terra sigillata, aco-cups from augusteic time and amphoras. Furthermore rests of lances (pila) and a bronze scrape tool (strigilis).

In the first world war a shot position which stands today still was built above the watchtower.
