The assumption, that the Via Mala
was already used in Roman time, is absolutely possible.
At the beginning of the gorge, south of Rongellen,
was a semi gallery on the left side of the Rhine. It has large
dowel holes.
It is supposed, that a roman bypassing variant ran from Thusis just to the south of this semi gallery on the left river side. This gallery was presumably a secondary way. Anyway this approximately 90 cm wide place could not be used with carts.
The roman main way is presumed on the right river side.
This semi gallery can be seen from the kiosk in the Via Mala gorge on the other river side.
