Excavations of the years 1975 to 1977 brought to light the remains of a settlement of the late roman empire on the hill at the west end of Castiel. The surface of the hill is 80 to 20/30 meters.
At the edge
of the hill surface ran a wall with 80 cm width and presumably 2 to 3 meters
height. A square wall which could have been a question of a tower was on the eastern
side.
On the northern and southern side were dwelling buildings of wood along the walls. Their ground plan was on average 4.5 to 5.5 meters. In most houses were stoves with a foundation of stones.
The place of refuge went presumably back to the 4th century and was used until the 5th century. The hill plateau was fortified in the in the 6th century again.
Among other things following was found: axes, hammers, chisels, a sickle, belt buckles, all of iron. Arm and finger rings of bronze and pieces of pottery. Furthermore 2 coins form the years 118 and 161 and three from 260 to 268.
