Back to main survey

Relay MurusIn the north of the present Promontogno exists a natural dam.

Obviously this passage was used already in roman time. The way led from Promontogno to the plateau. Here were in Middle Ages 3 m strong walls on the western and eastern side. These went back presumably on roman walls. The way continued to the Malojapass.

In accordance with the Itinerarium Antonini (a list of relays at important streets, from the time after 286 AD) this place was called Murus. This public relay (mutatio), was maybe also a customs post.

According to investigations in the years 1921, 1923, 1925, 1926 and 1928 was found under the medieval street an older (roman?) one. South of the street was a large building with 12 m front length. To the north were different buildings. A two-room bath-building had one room which an hypocaust. A 23 m long retaining wall (?) ran along the street. Wide northern was a further building with at least 23 to 12 m size.

Further finds at this place were among other things: Brick rests, two consecration altars for Mercurius Cissonius and fragments of Lavez vessels.

Today still both medieval walls are to be seen.
