Basis of my visit and this report was the booklet „Die Römische Wasserleitung von Liestal nach Augst“ (The Roman water pipe from Liestal to Augst), 1997 and the leaflet „Führer zur Römischen Wasserleitung“ (Leader to the Roman Water Pipe), 1997.
This water pipe led
from the municipality boundary from Lausen to August (Colonia Augusta Raurica). The distance
was approximately 6.5 km. The surely known southernmost point was on 325 meters above sea, the northernmost, on 315 meters about sea. Thus the difference in levels was only 10 meters,
a gradient of approximately 1.5 %o.
This pipe ran subterranean. The foundation was approx. 40 cm thick.
Over it were in a distance of 90 cm walls of stone, which were approx. 60 cm
thick. These were in rule 1.35 meter tall. Up to a height of at least 80 cm these
were jointed with face stones in the interior.
Above the sidewalls
was a vault. Up to a height from approx. 75 cm the channel interior was faced with a waterproof brick mortar.
Until today at least 60 places of finding are known. Some can be visited, which is listed in the following.
