In the early 1st century
AD was built a roman farm in the present field Munzach. It followed presumably a Celtic predecessor settlement.
The first building was presumable of timber and was later rebuilt in stone. Finally the construction had a surface from 320 to 160 meters and was oriented to east. On the west side of the mansion was a 11 meters broad wing. In front of this was a 3 meters broad porticus. The living rooms and the kitchen were in this part. In this part of the building 3 rooms had a hypocaust. 2 rooms had a mosaic floor. A corridor and the porticus had a mosaic floor too.
On the south side was
a 45 long wing. In this were the bath-rooms. 3 rooms were
heated with a hypocaust.
East of this part of the building was a two-storey hall building.
Various economics buildings were along the rest of the south enclosure wall. Along the north enclosure wall were various living and economic buildings.
West of the mansion was a source sanctuary.
From the middle of the 4th century the finds in the farm become sparse. From the middle of the 6th century they increase again. This medieval settlement existed until around the year 1'200.
Among other things following was found in the farm: Walls of colored marble, cornice pieces of marble, fragments of mural paintings, pieces of pottery fragments, a well pipe of marble, column bases, capitals of marble, statuettes, a semimeter-big dolphin of a fountains of bronze and coins.
Furthermore the present Kirchhof (Kirchplatz) is supposed to go back to a Roman fort. Whether this is archaeological secured or is presumed due to the design (a house line that encloses a place with the church) is not known to me.
I will look up the water pipe which led to Augst separately.
