Friday, 15.07.2005 - Winkel, Zurich

Around the year AD 20 was built approx. 500 meters northwest of the present Seeb a roman farm.

PraefurniumThe mansion had 6 conversions. It was oriented to northwest and was in the final configuration 82.4 to 56.7 meter large. It had a central tract, a western wing with the bath and living rooms and an eastern wing. Along the central tract and the inner side of the two wings was a porticus.

Within the pars urbana (living-part) were two adjoining buildings. One of that had a kiln. In addition to that existed a further bath-building with several rooms from which two had a hypocaust.

Further buildings were in the pars rustica (economy section). First were onto Building Cboth sides of the farm wall, directly bordering the wall between the pars urbana and the pars rustica, two cattle pens. After that further economics buildings followed. In the corners of the pars rustica were small economy buildings. From both sides of the central tract an open crypto porticus led to the wallFountain house between the pars urbana and the pars rustica. Here was a fountain house.

During the excavation was found a face of 395 to 197 meters of the enclosure wall. Presumably it reached to the Seeber lake south of the mansion that was filled in in the 19th century.

The finds were very numerous. Among other things were found: Mosaics, a column capital, plate elements of clay, marble and a Jupiter bust. Also piece of pottery, tools and other were found.

Channel heatingThe farm was destroyed around the year 250 AD, however at least partial reused.

The western wing of the villa Rustica is today preserved in a shelter, the kiln too. Some further walls are preserved too. Other ones were marked with plates.
