On the Plateau to the west of the present Sermuz was a Celtic oppidum.
It was inhabited presumable during the whole time of the Gallic wars (58 - 51 BC) and was abandoned at the beginning of the Roman time, therefore about 15 BC.
Only
the rampart of this settlement is known. A so-called murus gallicus. This wall was approx. 5 meters high and 100 meters long. In
the northeast of it was a ditch.
The settlement was southwest of the wall and approx. 7 hectares large. It is not dug up yet.
Due to the small distance to the settlement in Yverdon-les-Bains (Eburodunum), which existed since the 2nd century BC, the book "The Celts in Switzerland" mentions the supposition that Sermuz was only a flight castle.
The
murus gallicus was reconstructed in part and can be visited today west of Sermuz.
