Municipium Segobriga (Saelices) |
This city reached
its height in the 1st century AD.
Still through Augustus (27 BC to AD 14) it was raised in the status of a
municipium.
Around AD 79 was built the theater. Around this time was
presumably built the
amphitheater, too. Further important buildings were the forum, two baths and the city walls. The city hill was dominated
by a citadel.
The city was an administrative center of the agriculture and the mining industry.
In the time of the Visigoths was here a bishop's see. During the
Moorish occupation (from AD 711) the city was abandoned. Until today the terrain remained, except for a church, undeveloped.
All above-mentioned buildings are today to visit in a archaeological park. This has the following opening hours (in 2004):
