La Vila Joiosa |
Near of the entry to the
campground Hercules is a roman grave tower, which is named today "Sant Josep tower" (Torre de Sant Josep).
It was part of a necropolis which was excavated in the 18th century. It
was built in the middle of the 2nd century AD. It must have belonged to an
important personality in the local aristocracy. The top of the building,
possible
a pyramid-shaped liked construction, is missing today. The whole building could have been 12 meters high,
double what is preserved today.
A hole in the front and one in the opposite wall were for making libations.
Obvious is not
known, to which town the necropolis belonged. 4 cities are known in the present province Alicante, one of that was called Allon.
The grave monument is freely accessible.
