Colonia Patricia Corduba (Cordoba)

Back to the report about Spain

At this place was a first settlement around the year 1'100 BC near the present Parque Cruz Conde.

TempleThis tartessian settlement got in the middle of the 6th century into the sphere of influence of the Iberian culture. Under the Phoenicians and also Carthaginians the place had some importance. In the proximity of this settlement was set up in the middle of the 2nd century BC Cordoba by Claudius Marcellus.

In the civil war between Gnaeus Pompeius and Gaius Iulius Caesar the city was at Caesar's side, but was obviously partial destroyed.

MausoleumThe city was raised later to a colony and became the capital of the province Baetica. In this city lived also the relatives of the Annaeus family. Also the two Lucius Annaeus Seneca originated from this family (Senior and junior (4 BC to AD 65)).

Against the end of the 3rd century the emperor of the west - Marcus Aurelius ValeriusPalace Maximianus - resided at this place. Therefore was constructed a palace-like house.

Following roman remains are today visible:

Square of the theater (integrated in the archaeological museum)

Except of the museum everything is freely accessible. During my visit in the year 2004 the square of the theater was not accessible (Tuesday: 14.30 to 20.30 o'clock/Wednesday to Saturday: 9.00 to 20.30 o'clock/Sunday and holiday: 9.00 to 14.30 o'clock).

In front of the museum construction works were running. Here was the theater. Possibly this were conservation works.

The references to roman buildings are sparse. It could be that rests of the circus are also visible.
