Gades (Cádiz) |
In the antiquity
the set up of Gadir by the Phoenicians was defined in the year 1'100 BC. Modern
researches date this foundation of the Phoenicians in the year 800 BC. From the 5th century the city
came under control of the Carthaginians.
In the year 206
BC in the second Punic war the city was conquered by the Romans. After that it was renamed in Gades.
In the years 70 to 60 BC the city was expanded. In this connection was also built a theater.
Also Lucius Iunius Moderatus Columella, who moved later to Italy, came from this city. The work "de re rustica" comes from him, a treatise in 12 volumes about the agriculture from the years 60 to 65 AD.
At the beginning of the 5th century the city was conquered by the Visigoths.
Today only still few remains from the roman Cádiz are to see:

In the Casa del Obispo should be an excavation, which covers the 7th century BC to the present time. Also a building from the 2nd to 1st century BC should be there. On the city map this place is not drawn in. |
