Since old times was a connection from the northeast to the southwest of Spain. It was named the via Herculea. It run more or little along the Mediterranean Sea coast. After Valentia it turned to southwest and ended in Gades (Cádiz).
The street was integrated later in the via Augusta. This street was built in the years 8/7 BC in the province Tarraconensis and from the year 2 BC in the province Baetica. At this time is was lengthen to Carthago Nova (Cartagena) and branched off from there to Gades.
Along this street
were built various arches. One of these was constructed in the first decades of the 2nd century
near the present Cabanes.
The base consisted of two ashlar rows which supported the pillar basis. The archivolt (bow) was formed with various great wedge stones. Rests of the profile section didn't survive.
The arch is 5.35 meters high and 6.52 meter broad.
