Municipium Sexi Firmum Iulium (Almuñécar) |
I have only few information over the roman past of this place.
Presumably
the Phoenicians set up this city. A fort which was presumably built in Punic time kept on being used in roman time. Today
is here the Castillo de San Miguel.
In the city
was furthermore a large garum (fish sauce) factory. It was used from the 4th century
BC up to the 4th century AD.
An aqueduct from the springs of the Rio Verde led to the city.
Today some remains of the roman Almuñéncar are to see in and around the city:
|
Garum factory | |
|
Parts of the aqueduct at different places
|
Cuevas de Siete Palacios (which is interpreted as a water depot)
|
Wall rests (near a part of an aqueduct) - indicated as thermal springs
|
Grave buildings |
Except for the water depot (a museum
is inside it) and the fort, everything is freely accessible.
However, the aqueduct rests are heavily to find. These are
to the part presumable only
to reach by foot with a longer walk.
