Saturday, 13.11.2004 - Tenedo (Zurzach), Aargau
Around the year 15 BC the Rhine was crossed by the Romans. Therefore was built a fort in Dangstetten.
To its protection was built a fort in Zurzach. Later it was rebuilt a little bit to the west. In the middle of the 1st century AD was constructed a new and larger fort.
On the occasion of an emergency excavation was laid open a
part of the vicus west of
these forts. Since the buildings were
by the majority of timber, no wall rests are visible. Gravel layers of two
stages of the vicus are visible. These come from ways between the houses. The lower
layer is from the augusteian time (27 BC to AD 14), the upper one from the tiberian-claudian time (14 - 54
AD). In deeper layers were also found traces of buildings, which are dated in the year 1'000
BC.
The roman finds, in particular between the two
gravel layers, are numerous. It is a question of amphora parts, clay lamps, medical
instruments, keys, a Mercury statue, dishes (also terra sigilata) and other. These
objectes are interpreted as waste. Presumably the
vicus used at this time only a smaller
part.
I also refer to a former report about this place.
