Saturday, 24.04.2004 - Wagen, St. Gallen
In the 1st century
AD was built on a hill southeast of the present Wagen a villa
rustica.
It was altered repeatedly. The mansion was oriented to northwest. Presumably it had a porticus and two corner projections.
To the west from it was an other building with a basement. Even more western was a further small building. This could have been a bath-building. At least there are indications to a hypocaust heating.
In the rubble of the basement were found rests of mural painting. This was from the room above the cellar. In that was scratched on "masclus permisit nato tran..." (Masclus allowed his son ...). This shows that the inhabitants of the house spoke and wrote Latin. Also different tools were found here, what indicates to a storeroom.
The farm was used presumably until the 3rd century.
The basement was conserved in 1946. In 2001 it was fell to pieces however so strongly that all was covered.
The ruins are at the coordinates 710 210/231 750.
