Under L. Domitius Corbulo was built a canal between the Maas (Mosa) and the Rhine (Rhenus) presumably before the year AD 49.
Mainly
were used existing rivers for the 23 roman miles long canal, the Vliet and the Gantel. Only few kilometers had to be dug therefore.
The canal flow west of Leiden (Matilo) into the Rhine. He was 12 to 14 m broad and presumably 2 m deep. The banks were strengthen in part.
In Leidschendam a small section of the canal is to be seen today.
Remark through the author: At other places is mentioned instead of L(ucius)? Domitius Corbulo the name Cnaeus Domitius Corbulo. He was legate in Germania Inferior.
