This
region was already settled before the Romans. These set up here the settlement
Coriovallum about 2'000 years ago.
It was on two important streets. Boulogne-sur-Mer (Gesoriacum/Bononia) - Cologne (Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium) and Xanten (Colonia Ulpia Traiana) - Treves (Augusta Colonia Treverorum). Because of that arose an important center of trade.
Shortly after the year 400 the Romans withdrew. Obviously the region stayed settled however.
From this time the thermal springs which
can be visited in an museum are to be seen today. These have a
surface of 50 to 50 meters. They were public and accessible to men and women - at different times.
