| Dalheim (Ricciacus) | Back to the report about Luxembourg |
The vicus Ricciacus lay on the roads Metz (Divodurum Mediomatricum) - Treves (Augusta Colonia Treverorum) and Lyons (Colonia Copia Claudia Augusta Lugdunum) - Aachen (Aquae Granni).
It
was set up in the years 18/17 BC instead of a treverian predecessor settlement through Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa as a
relay
. In the years
AD 70/71 the settlement area was divided again and the timber constructions were replaced
by stone buildings.
Around the year 275 the vicus was destroyed through Germanic raids for the first time. This was repeated again around 353/355. Finally the vicus was left in the year 407.
In the 3rd century the surface of the settlement was approx. 25 hectares.
Next to the private houses also greater public buildings, an inn, several temples, thermal springs and a theater for 3'500 to 4'000
spectators existed.
Today several houses and the theater are to be seen. Furthermore the so-called eagle monument was constructed in the year 1855. The base are tuff blocks of the theater. These were removed obvious already in roman time and eventually reused for a burgus again.
At the street in direction Medingen is set up a milestone from the year 121 in the forest.
