Already the Gauls settled at this place which they called Ares Launos. It is on a high plateau.
Around
AD 52 the Romans reached the town and began with the Romanizing. The place was called now Orolaunum.
Among Tiberius Claudius Nero Germanicus (AD 41 - 54) two important streets were set up near. Reims (Durocortorum Remorum) - Treves (Colonia Augusta Treverorum) and Metz (Divodurum Mediomatricum) - Tongeren (Atuatuca).
Around the years 280
to 300 the town was surrounded with a wall. Later was here a fortified high
settlement.
