Vilamoura

Persistylium Back to the report about Portugal

At this place was built in the 1st century AD a villa rustica.

The rooms of the house were grouped around a peristylium. In an annex was the bath-tract with frigidarium, tepidarium and caldarium. Furthermore the villa had towers at the two corners of the main facade.

NatatioNext to this villa was a further bath-building. This had a frigidarium, tepidarium, laconium, caldarium and a large natatio.

Two small houses were a few meters from that. These had as the villa floors with mosaics.

Garum tankA further house could have been a question of a warehouse. Furthermore different tanks were in the ground. In these was presumably produced garum (fish paste).

In a grave monument were niches for urns. HereNiches were presumably buried the masters of the villa.

The villa was presumably an important commercial centre. In particular for the here produced garum. Also the large bath and the small houses let presume the regular presence of visitors or traders. The villa was next to a lagoon which is silt up today.

The main building kept on being inhabited even at the time of the Moors. This is verified with silos from this time along the walls.

The current excavations will supply certainly further findings from the villa.
