Cetium (St. Poelten)

Decumanus maximus Back to the report about Austria

The Municipium Aelium Cetium was proclaimed under Publius Aelius Hadrianus. This presumable as a result of his tour of inspection through the Danube provinces in the year AD 122. At this place crossed the street from Ovilava (Wels) via Melk the Tragisamus (Traisen) and continued to Comagena (Tulln). Along the Tragisamus led a vicinal street. It came from the alp passes passed Mariazell and continued to Favianis (Mautern). In the Kamptal it reached the barbaricum.

Cetium obviously didn't have any worth mentioning predecessor settlement. The town was planed in a raster system. It existed seven decumani (western-eastern-streets) and 5 cardines (northern-southern-streets). This was a system of 6 to 4 insuale.

Up to his decline around AD 400 Cetium was always a civilian settlement without strong military presence. The partial find of a building inscription of the collegium fabrum (urban craft guild) indicates the site the forum. Because of a strong development could not be dug there however up to now.

The earliest found half-timbered houses go back to settled veterans of the Danube army. After a destruction during the Markomanni wars (around AD 170) many new buildings were constructed in stone.

After a further fire around AD 270 the town was given up in part. Under Flavius Valerius Constantinus (Constantin the great) (AD 309 - 337) the town had a new upswing with many new buildings. Conversions are also under the sons of Constantin (AD 337 - 361) to find regular.

With a warlike destruction under Flavius Valentinianus (Valentinian I) (AD 364 - 375) the fast decline happened in the last quarter of the century. In left residential areas were here and there dead women and men buried.

Today no remains are to be seen from this time. At the building of the parking under the city hall the there found houses were destroyed. A big building under the cathedral place was not made accessible up to know.
