Around the middle of the 1st century BC the Regnum Noricum had its largest extension. Through that the economical relationship to the Mediterranean region had its heyday - also favored by the hospitality contract (hospitium publicum) with Rome from the year 170 BC.
Around this time the settlement on the Magdalensberg was built through roman traders. Perhaps a sacral center of the Noric existed on the peak. Due to an inscription fragment it is supposed that this settlement had already the name Virunum.
At the beginning existed presumably liquefy places for noric iron and simple accommodations. Soon onto that a drastic reconstruction occurred. A rectangular place of 110 m length and 42 m width was built. It was surrounded with tabernae and dwelling houses and can be interpreted as a forum.
After that
grave political revolutions occurred. The alp nations where subdued in the years 16/15 BC. The region of the Ratie and Vindelie west of the Noric were occupied after hard fights against Rome. Presumably therefore occurred the noric occupation almost without exception peaceful. The result of this
was an additional revaluation for the settlement
place. It became the political center of the roman east alp region.
In the northwest of the forum was built
a new building instead of the tabernae. After further
reconstructions it was altered to
a
praetorium. In the tiberic era a podium temple was constructed in the middle of the northern front of the forum. It was dedicated to the cult Divus Augustus and Dea Roma. An
extension in early claudic time was unfinished. Nonferrous metal workshops in the east were replaced by
dwelling houses.
The settlement was
given up in the late 40's of the
1st century AD. The residents moved presumably mainly into the
new built Municipium Claudium Virunum at the foot of the mountain.
On
the mountain peak existed approximately since the year 20 BC a fortification
wall. It was demolished in late-augusteic-tiberic time again. It could have been a question of a residence of a
ruler. Here also a sanctuary existed, which one was visited to the late antiquity.
From the settlement the forum, the temple, the praetorium and also many houses are to be seen. One complex is presumably a question of a kind of inn with bath.
