Luguvalium, Carlisle

Shrine of a native deity

Back to main survey Great Britain

The first fort was built here in the year AD 75 between the later castle and the Tullie House. It was of timber, as his various succession buildings.

The last one at this place was however obvious of stone. Later the fort was moved and laid astride the wall at Stanwix (Uxelodunum).

In Luguvalium a larger settlement arose, which increased to a real town. The place was surrounded later even from a wall. Also an own administration was set up.

In front of the museum (Tullie House) presumably the only visible roman witness, known to me, is to be seen. It is a question of a shrine of a native deity from the year AD 220.

In this museum various find objects from the region are exhibited. Different subjects are dealt with (religion, tableware, hygiene, ...). Also the wall itself is a topic.
