Vallum crossing

Back to main survey Great Britain

In West Denton a wall stretch about some meters is to be seen. Few a hundred meter easternTurret a further wall stretch is visible in Denton Hall. Here also the foundation of a turret remained preserved.

A fort was in Condercum. This was built astride the wall, exactly as that in Cilurnum (Chesters). From that nothing is to be seen today anymore.

A temple for the local deity Antenociticus,Temple of Antenociticus which one lay outside of the fort, gives evidence today however still from that. The meaning of the deity is not today known.

Here the best preserved Vallum crossing is to be seen (picture at the beginning of the report). It is to be recognized clear, that the gate was opened from the north (upper picture section), therefore from the fort. The Vallum served therefore as a boundary to the military field between this and the Hadrian's Wall. Furthermore it is to be recognized that the street was resurfaced repeatedly (steps in its surface).
