Cilurnum (Chesters), Brunton

Cilurnum (Chesters), east gate

Back to main survey Great Britain

This fort was not planned for the wall system at the beginning. In the middle of the fort the foundations of a turret that stood before the fort here were found.

The fort was built presumable however before the year AD 130. It lays astride the wall. For every such fort is characteristic, that three gates (north, west and east gate) north of the rampart lay, therefore in the "enemy country". Obviously these three gates were soon to the construction blocked however. This is valid for the western portal of the north gate and possibly the whole west and east gate. Also the western portal of the south gate was blocked.

Further wall sections and interval towers Principiaalso are visible. The principia is alsoPrincipia (strong room) to see. Here a room is striking which one is under the ground level. This strong room was attainable through the aedes.

PraetoriumThe praetorium is a rather complex building. Not all rooms are to be interpreted. Also some bath rooms are available.

BarracksTwo barracks were laid open also.

A small gate in the eastern wall - the main gate opened itself north of the wall - leads to the bath house. Its walls are to the partBath house preserved at least a meter highly. All usual rooms of such a building are to be seen: apodyterium, frigidarium, laconium, 2 tepidaria, caldarium and the latrines.

East of the river Tyne the abutments of the bridge of the military street were laid open. The first bridge comes from the year AD 125, the second from the year 209.

Wide to the east in Brunton the rests of a well preserved turret are to be seen.
