Bonnybridge (Rough Castle)

Fort

Back to main survey Great Britain

Near the so-called Rough Castle it is a question of a fort which was at the Antonine Wall.

Western ditchThe outlines of the fort can be seen clearly in the ground. The four side walls, as well as the ditches in front of that are to be recognized good.

A further annex was eastern of that. In that a bath house was among other things. Also here some wall outlines are to be supposed.

The design is not known to me. Stones are not however to see. Therefore I presume that the fort was mainly from timber and turf.

Ditch of the Antonine WallThe ditch of the wall is here preserved in impressively depth. It runs some hundred meters to the west. The wall is to be recognized also in part. To the south from that about a short stretch the mound of the military street can be seen.

To the north before the ditch some pits was excavated.Pits in front of the wall These were in several rows arranged, approximately a meter deep and provided with stakes at the ground. They were included in the defense system.
