Bo'ness

Northern gate

Back to main survey Great Britain

Before the 17 large forts were built at the Antonine Wall, small forts, so-called fortlets, existed. These looked similarly, as those at the Hadrian's Wall.

In the park of the Kenneil House at Bo'ness so one was dug up. It consisted of timber and turf. The foundation was of stone.

Seeing is the southern and northern gate. Also the fort walls. Furthermore the post holes of the barracks were marked.

Possibly this fort was altered later in a turret. The southern rampart became Ditch in front of the Antonine Wallheaped up and the northern gate was blocked.

In the park only still a small hollow of the ditch in front of the wall is to be recognized.
