The western end of the Hadrian's Wall was in Bowness-on-Solway (Maia). To the south from that, along the coast, a defense system led length from 60 km to Ravenglass.
It consisted of turrets, milefortlets (small forts every roman mile) and forts. A wall was not constructed. To the part fences were set up however.
A fort was in Alauna.
This is
today on private ground and was not dug up therefore. The ground is not
built-up however. Some ramparts (presumably from the fort wall or the ditch) are today still good to
make out. Next to that the reconstruction of a turret was set up.
Here also a museum is in the so-called Senhouse. The collection is one of the oldest private collections in Great Britain. It exists since the year 1599. Altars are to be seen, inscriptions and other.
To the north from here, at the B5300, at Allonby a milefortlet was dug up and preserved. Because of the foot and mouth disease this was not however accessible.
