At the position of the contemporary Castellammare di Stabia was buried Stabiae during the outbreak of the Vesuvius in the year AD 79. Here was Plinius the Younger witness of the outbreak.
Up to now some villas were found. Until the year 89 BC a vicus of which until today no trace was found existed however. It was destroyed in the corresponding year by Lucius Cornelius Sulla.
Two different excavations are to see. At the first it is a question of the so-called "villa San Marco".

It is a question of a larger villa with bath complex. Also a larger natatio is not missing. The mural paintings are to emphasize. These are from extraordinary artistic quality. | ![]() ![]() |
The villa Ariadne is also a question of a larger villa. Still a second complex was found at the same place. Whether it is a question of an enlargement-, predecessor- or other building, was not to see from the plan on site.
