This place was built - in different periods - at three positions. First was built the samnitic Saipins then the roman Saepinum and finally the contemporary Sepino.
Saepinum reminds one a little of the medieval Rome. It exist some - today still used - farms in the middle of the ruins. One does not see indeed any grazing cows, otherwise a certain association exists, however. This farms are a question of the hamlet Altilia.
The mentioned description lets presume indeed that one don't take the necessary care to the roman remains. But this is wrong. A lot of things were restored.
In particular parts of the town walls, inclusive the
four gates, were
rebuilt to the part. Furthermore the cardo
maximus and the decumanus maximus
are visible.
From some buildings in front of the forum are the foundation walls to see. A watermill sticks especially out.
From the buildings bordering at the forum some are to mention particularly.
Some columns of the
basilica were set up again. From the Jupiter temple are still a part of the podium and two altars
to see.
Only the foundation walls give evidence from the forum thermal springs. Since it is not to see which rooms had a hypocaust, their classification is difficult.
The walls of the
macellum
were rebuilt up to a
half
meter. The fountain in the middle is to see still. Behind that lies a further temple.
At the Porta Boiano -
bordering the town wall - lie the public thermal springs. The
auditorium of the
theater was
obviously
later altered in a house, what is today still good to see. Instead of the
stage house was also a new building constructed.
A
monument of the family Numisi,
which was obvious
completely rebuilt, is
before the west gate. A round tomb of Gaius Ennius Marsus is before the east gate.
