This place was set up in approx. 600 BC by the Greeks under the name Poseidona. After 127 years of domination of the Lukaner the city became in the year 273 BC under the name Paestum roman.
No modern town is above the ruins. On the contrary, the former state street SS 18 ran until
some years ago through the ruin ground.
The
remarkable are surely the three Greek temples (Basilica,
Poseidon temple
and Ceres temple). The correct interpretation would be 1st Hera temple, 2nd Hera temple and Athenaion.
Also some buildings from the roman time are visible
. From the amphitheater only still a semicircle remained preserved. The forum is still preserved in big parts. Only a small part was cut off through the state street.
From the thermal springs, which are named after the building
owner Marcus Tullius
Venneianus are only
a few foundation walls
remained. Without
a sketch they are not to interpret.
After a few shops follows a rectangular building with
a
semicircular row of seats which is interpreted today as a theater. Next to that is the
macellum. Opposite lies the
palaestra.
From the roman time is only
one temple to see. The
cardo maxiums and the
decumanus maxiumus are
existing with the paving.
From the Greek time comes a
ekklesiasterion (place of public
assembly). Also are some
Greek houses
to see. Houses in the roman style are not missing either however.
A complete preserved
sacellum (sanctuary) from the 4th century BC is interesting.
