Herculaneum

Town view Back to main survey Italy

This place was destroyed like Pompeii during the outbreak of the Vesuvius in the year AD 79. The presumably by the Greeks set up town was buried through a sludge avalanche. This was formed from pumice stone soaked with rain.

This stratum is today - a little raised through later House of the mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite (Mosaic)outbreaks - about 20 metersHouse of the mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite (courtyard) high. Through that no plundering could occur. The sludge is today hard as stone.

Because the modern city was built above great parts of the ruinsTown wall, only some districts could be dug up. It is a question of houses, that south of the decumanus maximus laid. And also here only a part.

Many residential buildings are to be seen. Here House of the deerconspicuous above allHouse of the deer the mural paintings. Since many rich Romans sat down here, the equipment of the houses is especially gorgeous.

Suburb thermal springs (Vestibulum) Among these private buildings another two thermal springs are to be seen. Interesting are aboveSuburb thermal springs (tepidarium) all the so-called suburb thermal springs. The tepidarium had a big basin.

From other public buildings is the palaestra to Palaestra (auditorium)mention, particularly the so-called auditorium,Palaestra (fountain) a high roofed corridor. From the basilica is only a small part of the wall to see. Therefore the forum must be sited in the nearness.

The theater was discovered, but it is not to be visited however. It lies west of the excavation ground, where modern houses are. The literature remain silent, but I presume that it can be reached only by subterranean tunnels.

Among the Augustus staff are not further Augustalenkollegiumshrines or temples to see. Presumably these laid north of the  decumanus maximums and possibly west or south of the excavation ground.
