The region between the Vesuv and Cumae was designated as phlegraeic fields in the antiquity. Today does this mean the area west of Neapolis between Cumae and the Capo Miseno.

Because of the volcanic activity the coastline has modified since this time some times.

Cumae is a Greek foundation. Around 334 BC the town became roman.

Still some buildings show the Greek time. Cave of the SibyllaEmphasizing is the sibylline cave.Cave of the Sibylla Up to now it was presumed that it is a question of a gallery with the residence of the mythical Sibylla. A newer theory interprets the building however as a defense construction.

The Crypta Romana is a question of a cave, Crypta Romanawhich goes under the Acropolis. It combined the lower city with the port and was constructed because of military purposes.

AcropolisAt the Acropolis was built much. The today visible structures come from different eras.

 

Jupiter templeThe Jupiter and Appolo temple come initially from the Greek timeApollo temple. The Romans altered it. Later they served as churches.

CapitolThe buildings of the lower city, such as the amphitheater are not public accessible.
