The region between the Vesuv and Cumae was designated as phlegraeic fields in the antiquity. Today does this mean the area west of Neapolis between Cumae and the Capo Miseno.
Because of the volcanic activity the coastline has modified since this time some times.
Cumae is a Greek foundation. Around 334 BC the town became roman.
Still some buildings show the Greek time.
Emphasizing is the
sibylline cave.
Up to now it was
presumed that it is a question of a gallery with the
residence of the mythical Sibylla. A newer theory interprets the building however
as a defense construction.
The Crypta Romana is a question of a cave,
which
goes under the Acropolis. It combined the lower city with the port and was constructed because of military purposes.
At
the Acropolis was built much.
The today visible structures come from different eras.
The Jupiter and
Appolo temple come initially from the Greek time
. The Romans altered it.
Later they served as churches.
The buildings of the lower city,
such as the amphitheater are not public accessible.
