Bauli

Piscina Mirabilis Back to main survey Italy

In Bauli and in Baiae were many villas in roman time.

Among an Odeon - which is named Sepolcro di Agrippina - are today only another two cisterns visible in Bauli.

The first is called Cento Camerelle or also Prigioni di Nerone. The two storeys are as followsCento Camerelle divided up: The upper floor exists of four parallel rooms. The lower one exists also of such. One presumes that this water winning appertained to the villa of the Orator Quintus Horensius. Later this house belonged to Antonia, the woman from Drusus and after that to Nero.

A further cistern is called Piscina MirabilisPiscina Mirabilis. It has a length of 70 meters, a width of 25,5 meters and a height of 15 meters. The capacity is 12'600Piscina Mirabilis cubic meters. This water winning stood at the end of the aqueduct of Serino. It was used for the supply of the fleet and the military at Miseno.

In Baiae some villas remained preserved. Also the relevant public baths. I hadn't time enough to visit them.
