Ruts are usually chiseled (or finally worn out) with a rounded bottom. Soil and small stones find then their place in the space between the flat tire and the bottom of the rut and do not disturb the passage. The rut shown has a tiny additional rut in its bottom, probably worn out by nails in the tire (Cap Couronne France).
