Bild15 Schematic interpretation of the gauge (denoted by S= "Spurweite") of carts as multiples of the "Roman palm" (a handwidth of 4 fingers=1/4 feet of 29.6 cm= 7.4 cm). The table on p. 260 gives examples for 10 localities with gauges which are multiples of a palm (between the inner sides of the wheels). The gauge from center to center of the wheels is larger by the width of the tires (R="Reifenbreite"), R is assumed to be 1/8 feet= 3.7 cm; n is the multiplicity number. The "fit" with this old measure is an indication for the antique origin of the ruts. The gauge is measured with the device shown in figs. 11 and 12. A frequently observed gauge in the Jura e.g. from the 17th cent. AD is 109-112 cm and does not fit the gauges of the table on p. 260. |
