Probably the oldest ruts for heavy loads: the "diolkos" for the transport of ships over the isthmus of Corinth (Greece). The ruts are chiseled in a "street" of large blocks of hard limestone  (the ground there is rather soft). As compared to the installation of these blocks, the chiseling work for the ruts required little additional effort.
