Porta Nigra To further pictures

The building mentioned Porta Nigra was the northern gate of the roman city Augusta Treverorum (Trier).

The black colour arose from weathering. The building became - presumably also because of lack of space - in a "ready-built house manner" makes out. The stones were already in size and form in the quarry prepared.

The gate was used from 1028 through the Greek monke Simeon as a hermit residence. Later the gate was altered in a church. But most of the originally substance was not destroyed. Therefore the gate is preserved today also well.

1804 Napoleon let reproduce the roman substance. These works were restarted in 1815 and ended in 1816.
