About in the seventh century BC settlements were constructed near the present forum through "oscic" tribes. Later the Etruscs built a city here. After that the place became "samnit". At the beginning of the third century Pompeji became "City ally" of Rome.
On the side of the Italics the city was occupied in the roman civil war by Sulla and lost the independence. In 80 BC Pompeji became roman colony with the name Cornelia Veneria Pompeianorum.
In 62 AD the city was damaged at a hard earthquake. During the outbreak of the Vesuv in 79 AD, which one the city destroyed, the damages were not eliminated completely yet.
