The construction of the Coliseum begun in the year 72 A.D. instead of a lake which appertained to the Domus Aurea from Nero.

It took approx. 50'000 spectators. Today it is doubted that sea battles were performed.

The oval is approx. 190 m long and 155 m broad. The outer wall is 57 m high and has four storeys.

The Coliseum has his name possibly from a gigantic statue of Nero near the amphitheater.
